What is shoulder pain?
The shoulder is made up of muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints that all work together for healthy movement of the shoulder. Shoulder pain can occur when any or all of these parts of the shoulder are affected by irritation or injury.
What causes shoulder pain?
The most common causes of shoulder pain are:
Strains: A strain of the ligament of the shoulder is caused by stretching or tearing and can be painful. Shoulder strains can make it difficult to move the shoulder and arm.
Rotator Cuff Injury: The rotator cuff refers to muscles and tendons surrounding the joint of the shoulder. A rotator cuff injury can be caused by overuse and is often seen in athletes or individuals who frequently lift heavy objects. The rotator cuff can become inflamed or even tear, causing shoulder pain.
Arthritis: Arthritis can affect the shoulder, causing inflammation or deterioration of the shoulder joint. Arthritis of the shoulder is common in older patients due to gradual wear and tear causing shoulder pain and limited range of motion.
