What is neck pain?
Neck pain is often experienced due to muscles of the neck that are strained, traumatic injuries or conditions of the upper spine. Neck pain can be treated without the need for surgery.
What causes neck pain?
Like the back, your neck is made up of small muscles, nerves, discs and vertebrae that can all become inflamed or irritated due to physical stress or injury.
The most common causes of neck pain are:
Muscle strains: Muscle strain of the neck is the most common cause of neck pain. Things such as working on a computer for hours at a time or repetitive motion using your head can cause a neck muscle strain.
Herniated discs: Herniated discs of the upper spine can lead to pinched nerves or nerve irritation, causing neck pain.
Arthritis: Arthritis of the neck, or Osteoarthritis, can be caused by wear and tear and can begin to break down the cartilage between the vertebrae. Patients with arthritis of the neck often experience neck pain and limited head mobility.
