What is knee pain?
Knee pain is a common condition that affects people of all ages. Knee pain can affect everyone from athletes to stay at home moms. Our knees constantly have pressure applied to them as we walk and any sudden movement or pressure can cause a knee injury and knee pain.
What causes knee pain?
The knee is made up of ligaments, tendons, muscles, joints and cartilage that all contribute to regular use of your legs. Injuries that cause sprains, strains, inflammation, or fluid build-up are often to blame for knee pain.
The most common causes of knee pain are:
Torn Meniscus: The meniscus is cartilage of the knee that stabilizes the knee joint. A sudden twist of the knee can cause a tear of the meniscus which causes knee pain, swelling and difficulty moving the knee.
Ligament Injury: The knee is made up of multiple ligaments. An ACL injury is the most common type of knee ligament injury. The ACL connects the femur to the tibia and can sprain or tear especially in athletes.
Arthritis: Arthritis of the knee can affect anyone but is more common with age. People who are overweight or are involved in sports are also prone to developing arthritis of the knee.
